about

Byland is following up the recent release of their record, “Gray”, with a stand alone single titled “Ray” - out November 12th. The track means a great deal to the band. It was written by Jake as a tribute to the life of his uncle, Ray, and the love that Ray had for his sister, Jake’s mother. It tells the story of the two hiding together from the pain of a challenging childhood. They would listen to records together in the basement and find relief to the sound of bands like Boston, The Doobie Brothers, and Fleetwood Mac. The song stands as an encouragement not to hide from pain alone, but to instead surround yourself with good music and good company. A notable appearance on the record is Ray’s nephew and namesake, Mitchell Raye, who plays the electric on the track. Led by Alie’s vocals and piano, the track also includes Abby Gundersen’s strings and Ed Brooks on the pedal steel.

lyrics

Ray

Verse 1
Trouble seemed to find us right away
No black and white - we all lived in grey
I tried to forget yesterday
Tried my best it wouldn’t go away

Chorus
(We had to)
Find a way to get away
Drop the needle smoke the J
Boston took us far away
The Doobies hid us from the pain
Stevie said we’d all be okay

Verse 2
Doctors said that mom might go away
Tried like hell, I couldn’t make her stay
To care for you, a promise made that day
If I had to, I’d work my life away

Chorus
We had to Find a way to get away
Drop the needle smoke the J
Boston took us far away
The Doobies hid us from the pain
Stevie said we’d all be okay

Bridge
I am who I am
I’ll do what I do
But it’s not for lack
Of loving you
(X2)

Chorus
Find a way to get away
Drop the needle smoke the J
Let Boston took you far away
Let the Doobies hide you from the pain
Stevie said we’d all be okay
